1st XV 10 v 18 Hendon RFC

Published on Monday, 14 January 2019

The Hedgehogs dropped to second place in the league, following a defeat at the hands of a well drilled and energised Hendon side on Saturday 12 January.

Hitchin kicked off and after several phases winger Fred Rooney sped down his wing and was able to get the ball inside to James Bolter to go over to score. The wind making the conversion almost impossible.

Play went back and forth between the two 22s and then, after 30 minutes,  the visitors had a lineout on the Hitchin 5 m line, but the throw-in was adjudged not straight. Hitchin were then penalised for a squint put in at the resulting scrum. From the penalty, Hendon crossed over but were held up.  From the scrum, Hendon spread the ball wide to outstrip the defence, to score a try, again unconverted.

Hitchin were unable to capitalise on several chances from penalties to add further points, and the score at half time was even at 5 all.

A great run by Bolter came to nothing when Hitchin lost possession. Again, they were unable to take advantage when a Hendon player was yellow carded, dropping the ball during a promising move.

Entering the last quarter of the game, a penalty to Hendon on the Hitchin 22 was successfully converted, but this was quickly answered by a try by Hitchin’s Man of the Match James Bolter, from a quickly taken penalty.

Hendon came back strongly and Hitchin were yellow carded 5 m from their line After several attempts Hendon eventually got a touch down which was well converted, considering the windy conditions.

After 50 minutes of an injury-hit second half, Hendon converted a penalty to make the final score 18 -10 and deny Hitchin a losing bonus point
