Rugby's back!

Covid compliant rugby training at M&Y

We got back to rugby from 29 March - so here's a quick round-up of what's been happening in the last few weeks.

Men’s rugby

We had a squad of 45 men at the opening training session on 30 March - all socially distanced and Covid compliant

Our first Touch-rugby fixtures happened at home (2xv and 3xv) on 17 April and at Datchworth (1xv)

We have entered into a special Cup competition at Biggleswade for the following adapted laws contact fixtures:

8 May - 1xv Stockwood Park (A), 2xv Stockwood Park (H)

15 May - 1xv Royston/Luton, 2xv Royston/Luton, one fixture at home, one fixture away.

22 May - Cup final or placement playoff.

Following a short summer break, the preseason 2021/22 will begin on Tuesday 6 July and have entered teams into:

Shelford 7s social tournament on 10 July

Norwich 7s social tournament on 31 July.

North Herts Rugby Festival @ Hitchin Rugby Club on 14 August.

Spectators are welcome at all three tournaments.  But please note that both Shelford and Norwich are charging a £5 entry fee - but there is lots going on in addition to the rugby.

We then will play two or three pre-season friendlies before league fixtures resume in early September!

Team Captains are:

Sean McGinnity 1XV

Mark Tiddles Tidey 2XV

Kam Nandra 3XV

Women’s Rugby

The women’s section has seen great numbers returning to training since Covid restrictions were lifted at the end of last month, with both returning and new players out in force.

The squad is busy preparing for a couple of sevens tournaments in the summer.  The first of these is Shelford 7s on Saturday 10 July and the second is the North Herts Rugby and Netball Festival hosted at Hitchin Rugby Club on 14 August.

The squad is looking forward to taking to the field again during the summer and will start to build towards the return of competitive leagues later this year. The women will also continue the recruitment drive throughout the summer to grow numbers – unbelievably successful in recent years.

Mini & Youth

The return to community sport has seen a huge buzz amongst the younger groups. Numbers are still increasing and there is significant interest from new players – it seems that after the lockdowns there is a desire for team exercise and structures!

Managing the space on a Sunday is still a great challenge – clearly made harder with all the Covid protocols. It has to be said the Covid protection work put in throughout the club has been amazingly good.

All being well, youth rugby hopes to move to adapted contact rugby matches after 26 April and matches are being booked.

Finally, Founders Day is set for Sunday 30 May. Hopefully we will continue to unlock as the aim is to give the youngsters some fun after a really tough year for them all – and some awards! Hopefully a mini festival type event for our Hitchin minis can be organised in the morning while the afternoon will see an U14 boys game against OAs and the Girls will host matches at U13, 15 and 18 level. All will be marshalled within Covid guidelines and will be an amazing feat of planning. And the parents also kept to the social distancing rules:

Just shows what a fantastic club Hitchin is when you see all the work going into all the playing sections.
