Hitchin Ladies shine in their first night game under the floodlights of King George V playing fields last Friday. Their league game against Peterborough Ladies was expected to be a tight game after their last meeting which ended in a narrow defeat for Hitchin. The game kicked off with Hitchin immediately putting Peterborough under pressure, but cold hands on a freezing night ensured that knock-ons were a plenty. Against the run of play, Peterborough scored first, but this woke up the Hitchin team and with excellent team play throughout, Hitchin pressure soon told. Fantastic rucking by all the forwards, with steals from Jan Haines and Steph Biggar ensured that Hitchin remained in possession for the majority of the game. Smashing tackles by Claire Crompton doubled with sheer pace allowed Jade Cooper to score a hatrick of tries and Amy Haughton to run from her own half to score under the posts. Natalie Mellowship on the wing kicked valuable points and made some penetrating runs to open up the pitch. The game was a testament to great team play and everyone including all the subs played a role in their emphatic 36 - 17 win. March sees a busy schedule for Hitchin Ladies with games every weekend, so if you fancy having a go at women's Rugby come along to one of their training sessions on Tuesdays, 7.30pm at Hitchin Rugby Club.
