Crucially on a really muddy pitch Cheshunt won the toss and
decided to play up the hill in the first half.
After 3 minutes Hitchin were awarded a penalty for offside
and Ben Wiggins successfully gathered the three points on offer. This was added to when Cheshunt were yellow
carded to make the score 6 nil to the visitors.
At the half way point and with another Cheshunt player in
the bin Ben Wiggins went over for a try which he converted.
With 7 minutes to go before the end of the first half
captain James Bolter went over for a try which was duly converted by Wiggins.
Just before half time Cheshunt having worked their way up
the hill were awarded a penalty but the kick was pulled wide.
Was it going to be enough of a lead ?
Half way through the second half the Hitchin centre was
yellow carded for offside but it was through the forwards that Cheshunt scored
pushing the Hitchin pack back for 15 m to score a converted try.
On the half hour Hitchin were again penalised with a yellow
card and again the Cheshunt pack shunted Hitchin over the line for a second try
which was converted.
With the clock ticking down Cheshunt kept attacking through
their forwards and their patience was rewarded with another try to make the
score 19 20 in favour of the visitors with the kick to come.
The kick was successful and Cheshunt breathed a sigh of
relief.
