Law Society RFC visited Old Hale Way for this 3rd
round London & SE Junior Vase cup game
A minute’s silence was
held before KO, in memory of Hitchin
vice -president Tony Walker, who sadly died on 24 October
Law Society kicked off and Hitchin went on the attack only to
be penalised for holding on. Jonathan Welsford went over but was adjudged
to have dropped the ball over the line.
A period of aerial ping pong ended when a fortunate bounce was held by
Matt Trussell who fed Will Evans, who raced in under the posts for a try
converted by Ben Wiggins.
With the referee playing advantage Ruiri Shanahan took a pass
from Sean McGinnity to cross for a try, again converted by Wiggins
A great passage of inter-passing between James Bolter and McGinnity came to an
unfortunate end in a forward pass.
However, with Hitchin pressing on the Law Society line a lucky
knock back gave Wiggins the opportunity to score and convert his own try.
Just before half time Ali Southward made a great break in
midfield and from a 5m scrum James Bolter dotted down for an unconverted try,
to give the home side a 26- 0 lead at the interval
From their kick off the ball did not go 10m but Hitchin were
caught napping and Law Society made good progress down the line before being
tackled into touch.
A penalty to Hitchin was kicked for a line out on the Law
Society 5m Line and from the rolling maul McGinnity charged over from 2 metres,
the conversion just missing.
A certain try for Hitchin was only denied following a quickly
taken penalty by Will Evans, when he was bundled into touch 5 metres out.
From a lineout on the Hitchin 22 Law Society hit back with a
well taken converted try.
Hitchin quickly replied with captain Tom Tidey breaking
through on the opposition 22 to score under the posts to make the conversion a
formality.
Then a period of great pressure by the Law Society forwards ended
with several penalties against Hitchin and a yellow card ,which the visitors
were able to capitalise upon, and score an unconverted try.
But the hosts had the
last word with a penalty by Wiggins, and
a try by Bolter who was on the end of a pass from Evans.
Another good performance from the whole team, which had a few
regulars missing, and there will be
competition for places for the top of
the table clash next week, against Finsbury Park RFC at Old Hale Way - KO 2 pm
