U8s Newsletter - 10th,11th September

A great rugby-packed weekend with a friendly Saturday afternoon match and then the Open Day on Sunday.

We had 16 new players on Sunday so a big welcome to them and thank you to existing players for being so welcoming.
It was fantastic to see such a big number of new players joining us. All the newcomers put lots of effort into the exercises (as did the experienced players) and demonstrated some great potential.

Here are the match reports for Saturday's matches. Unfortunately Barnet were unable to get enough players so we played amongst ourselves instead. Thank you to Max for joining us from the U7s to make up numbers.

Greens: Ptolemy, Callum, Oli, Luke, Scott, Max
Reds: Dominic, Jabob M, Jacob F, Tomas, Tom, Kieran

MATCH 1 : Result: Hitchin Reds  5, Hitchin Green
s 4
Tries: Greens – Luke, Max, Scott, Callum   Reds – Tom (4), Kieran

It was very encouraging and exciting to see that despite the long summer, the U8s picked up where they left off last year with some very convincing rugby. Good support, good tagging (mostly), and good running. In the first half, the Greens opened with good solid offense and supporting play, resulting in a try for Luke. The Reds replied with a run-in try from Tom. The game continued tit for tat with tries from Max for Greens and a run-in for Kieran (Reds). The 7thphase of play turn over ball resulted in another breakaway try for Tom, to leave it 3-2 at half time. It was good to see the boys responding well to the stricter implementation of the rules and getting on with the game when blown up for things they would have got away with last year.

The second half was much of a repeat of the first. Tries for Scott and Callum for Greens, and 2 more for Tom on Reds. Tagging was generally good (compared with last year), with two exceptional diving, try-saving tags from Kieran and Tom. Lots to build on for the coming season, also with lots of potential for improving skills at the new level.

MATCH 2 - Result:  Hitchin Greens  5 - Hitchin Reds 3

Tries: Greens – Callum (2), Luke, Oli L, Ptolemy   Reds – Tom H (3)

A good warm up friendly match.  All players showed a lot more focus and listened to the coaches well.
